What Does Floor Staining and Finishing Mean?

Table Of Contents

Floor staining and finishing are two key steps in improving the appearance and durability of wooden floors. Staining involves applying colour to the wood to enhance its natural grain or completely change its tone. Finishing is the protective topcoat that seals the surface, guards against wear, and gives the floor its final sheen — whether that’s matt, satin, or gloss.

Together, staining and finishing allow homeowners to refresh old floors or customise new ones, creating a look that suits their interior style while protecting the timber for years to come.

What Is Floor Staining?

Staining is the process of adding colour to the wood. Unlike paint, which covers the wood, stain soaks into the grain, highlighting its natural patterns. Staining can:

  • Darken light woods

  • Lighten orangey or yellow tones

  • Create a modern grey, black, or smoked effect

  • Enhance the grain for a richer, deeper look

Staining is entirely optional, but it’s a great way to update older floors or achieve a specific design style without replacing the boards.

What Is Floor Finishing?

Finishing refers to the protective seal applied on top of the wood after sanding and staining. The finish determines how the floor feels, looks, and performs. The three most common types are:

1. Lacquer

A hard, durable coating that forms a strong seal over the wood. Ideal for busy homes and high-traffic areas.

2. Hard Wax Oil

A natural-looking finish that soaks into the wood. It gives a warm, matte appearance and can be repaired in small areas without redoing the whole floor.

3. Traditional Oil

Enhances the grain and provides a natural, classic look. Requires more frequent maintenance but offers a beautiful finish.

Benefits of Staining and Finishing

1. Enhances the Appearance of the Floor

Sanding, staining, and finishing together can transform dull or worn floors into stunning, high-quality surfaces.

2. Adds Long-Term Protection

A good finish protects the wood from scratches, spills, and everyday wear. It also slows down fading from sunlight.

3. Allows Full Customisation

You can choose the exact colour, tone, and sheen you want. Whether you prefer a rustic look, modern tones, or deep, rich shades, staining gives you full control.

4. Improves Longevity

Proper finishing helps wooden floors last longer and reduces the need for major repairs.

Is Staining and Finishing Right for Your Floors?

If your wooden floors look worn, faded, or outdated, staining and finishing can completely refresh their appearance without replacing the boards. They’re ideal for homeowners who want a personalised look, better protection, and a longer-lasting surface.
